G & H weeks

Well, I got a bit behind with my alphabet series.  I worked on these a bit more today and am caught up.  We start on the letter "I" tomorrow.

The letter G was from the side of a truck, taken while I was stopped at a signal.  It was black on white, but I couldn't find a good background for it, so changed the color to blue & liked the way this background worked with it.

I can't remember where I shot the H  -- but it is pretty much straight out of the camera (splotches and all), with a small square pattern in the background.

This is such a fun class!

Smith Valley NV again

My sister found these chains,  wonderful colors.  Chains?  Gears?  What are they?     This is one of the shots I took of this truck.

Hawk in Smith Valley NV

Red-tail hawk seen in Smith Valley NV.   Driving home from the sheep ranch, we saw this magnificent hawk.  If it's not a red-tail, hope someone will let me know what it is.

Smith Valley NV

My sister has a friend who lives in Smith Valley, NV.  The family has a sheep ranch and we were lucky enough to be able to wander around the ranch, watch the shearing, check out all the sheep, new puppies, horses.  While walking we spotted this newborn and Mom, along with two others,  in a pen.  They are so cute -- look at the legs on this little guy!

Beach in Reno?

Yup, a beach on the Truckee River.   My sister's house is on the Truckee and the sign is in her backyard.   I'm spoiled with the beaches in San Diego, so what can I say?   She does have a pathway down to a small flat area that one can stand on & watch the rafters go by in the summer.  I wouldn't want to go to her beach in the winter.

Another walk around Virginia Lake

Another walk around Virginia Lake, Reno.   The temps aren't too high (maybe 38 degrees), but the sun is shining and the blue skies are beautiful.    These three white ducks were swimming together seemed to be posing for me.   The seagull on the snow "nest" caught my eye --  she looked like she was guarding something (hopefully not eggs).

Another post ...

Another shot of downtown Reno from my Dad's front yard (late in the afternoon). I can't resist taking these shots every time I come to visit.  The snow-capped mountains that surround us are beautiful -- I can say that today because we have had some sunshine and blue skies, and it was great to get out & about.  Yesterday was another issue -- gray, cold, windy & snowy.     Loved today!

Snow again in Reno

More snow today in Reno.  About 4 inches last night, then a reprieve.   I ran out with my sister for a few errands, and returned home before the next round of  snow.  We shoveled the driveway (it's not a long one) -- not a bad job, because I know next week I'll be back home in San Diego.

These two shots were taken out the back and front doors at my Dad's house.  I love the gazing ball any time of year, but it's fun to see it now with a light covering of snow.

Not in San Diego ...

I'm in Reno visiting family ... flew in last night and could see the night lights in town as we landed.  Just a bit bumpy because of high winds, but certainly no snow.  Woke up this morning to about 3 inches of snow, and it's still snowing!   Surprise  (well it was forecast ...)   My Dad has several bird feeders out, this one is a block of bird seed, has to be replaced weekl,y and normally is covered with 20 or so quail.  Today there is just one lonely quail.   Hope to see more.

Coots coming for a landing ...

We visited Santee Lake a few days ago, saw lots of birds and ducks.  I especially like the coots.    This guy was coming in for a landing and I liked the pattern he  made on the water.

Rainbow Lories

One of the most colorful birds at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are the Rainbow Lories.   It's fun to buy the nectar they eat -- it comes in a small paper cup and the birds sit on your hand and drink the nectar while you hold the cup.   Don't you love these colors?

Elephants

A quick trip to the San Diego Safari Wild Animal park to see the elephants and a few other animals we didn't get to see yesterday. We were up in the Elephant Overlook & I spotted this baby elephant -- such a cute little guy. I've looked on the Zoo web site for a name and birth date but couldn't find it tonight, but will post it as soon as I find out.

San Diego Safari Park outing today

My friend, Cabby, is here for a few days visiting from Reno. We went to La Jolla yesterday to photograph the pelicans, Santee Lake for other birds & ducks, and today the San Diego Safari Park. She treated us to the photo caravan -- and in addition to up-close photography, we got to feed the giraffes and rhinos. This little giraffe (on the left) is four years old & is Cabby's "baby" -- 4 years ago when Cabby visited here she photographed this one being born. The guides on the caravan know their giraffes and were able to introduce Cabby to her. It was fun photographing and feeding all these guys -- they are curious and hungry!

Pelicans at La Jolla

Brown pelicans in their breeding plumage at La Jolla Cliffs. Beautiful day to hang out on the cliffs!

Another view

Another view of the ranucula. I still haven't planted it yet. There is still more to photograph, especially as they open up a bit more.

Ranuncula

Today I bought two ranunculus to plant in pots that I have outside, but I never made it outside -- I found my macro lens & started shooting. That's when I realized that it's been awhile since I've used my macro lens. Boy, am I out of practice! I did like what was going on in this one, especially after I used the Topaz simplify filter a bit on it. They are so lovely.

It's "F" week.

It's F week around here. What's fun is taking the same F and adding different textures. Here are two I'm submitting to the class.

Whale Watching Saturday

Whale watching yesterday. It was a great day on the water. We saw lots of seals, pelicans and seagulls, sunfish, small shark (I'm guessing it was a Grey Smoothhound) -- but the only whale we saw was in Shane's book ("A Whale of a Tale"). The skies, as usual, were beautiful! Thanks Carolyn & Erik for the invitation.

Lake Hodges area, San Diego North County

I went for a walk today with my neighbor, Lillian. She's been kind enough to introduce me to some great areas for walking. We actually walked around an area referred to as the overflow for Lake Hodges. It's been a dry bed for years, but lots of rain this year filled it up. Beautiful day, on the cool side for San Diego -- barely made it above 60-degrees with frost warnings overnight. Sorry for my friends who are living in areas and dealing with snow & ice, but, remember, you do have an invitation to come visit anytime. And Maureen, we have trains here too ;-)

Crested Screamers

When I visit the San Diego Zoo, the first place I like to visit is the flamingo pond (right up front). In addition to the flamingos, there are many ducks, birds, and the Crested Screamers. I noticed one of these birds last week sitting on a nest. This week there were two, the one on the nest got up, checked out the eggs, then the second one got on the nest as they circled around the eggs, both checking them out, and finally, one settled in. The male and females both take turns on the nest. It was fun to see the change of guards! I'm hoping I'll be lucky enough to see the chicks when they hatch. They incubate the eggs for up to 45 days. I'm not sure how long they've been on the nest at this point, but will try & find out.

It's "E" week.

These are two of the E's I submitted to Carol Leigh's class "26 in 26". The green E was a compilation of a couple of photos, then I used the blend modes to bring out the layers. Fun & addicting. The second E, as in East, was as shot: there's a beautiful fountain in the Little Italy section of San Diego with points of the compass. I'm sure I'll be using N, S, & W as needed.

Clyde

Meet Clyde, a 300 lb orangutan at the San Diego Zoo. He was resting in the sun, waiting for lunch (which was served about 10 minutes after the photo was taken).
